Spalted Maple Wood Bowls

Sold

"Spalting is a naturally occurring process in trees that have died or are starting to die.  The problem is that if it's not harvested at exactly the right stage, the decay will become so pronounced that the integrity of the wood fiber is lost."  This maple tree was given to Gene in exchange for the carpentry work he did at a nearby church.  Look at the beauty!

The Wooden Swan

Here is a recent woodwork project. Gene did this without proper carving tools. As sales increase, we'll be able to purchase some carving tools. This would make a heart warming gift this holiday season. Especially since 20% of proceeds from sales of Gene's one of a kind vintage wood swans will go toward furniture to make and give to families who need replacement furniture for damaged homes.
It can be whitewashed or kept natural wood. Here is a photo of an actual swan in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

to order a folk art wood swan - email thehaystore@yahoo.com with "swan" in the subject line.  these are priced at $175 and up.

Hay

Gene makes the most splendid hay! This is second cutting.
Green and Great. Our Horses and Goats l o v e HIM!!!!  So do I...Gene has been making hay suitable for horses since he became a farmer in 1996.  Not an easy task, haying has a small and crucial timeline.   Equipment will break down and troubleshooting on the field in the middle of haying is commonplace, because the weather is unpredictable even with the Natl Weather Service, because implements are not easy to move around and change, because hay is heavy to lift and stack for proper curing, because when you make hay the sun has to shine so it is hot and sweaty work.  Need I say more?

On behalf of all the cattle and equines that rely on farmers like Gene for sustenance off the fields and in wintertime - I thank you!
